The Fine Line Between Remote Working and Mental Health

Remote working became the new norm. The virus has spread, and lockdowns were necessary, so working from home was the only option left.

That’s when companies were pushed to change their habits and introduced remote working into their new lifestyle.

It’s All About Mindset

Remote working has its benefits and some people adapted to it quickly; they’re feeling more comfortable since they are working from a personalized work environment “their comfort zone”. Plus, employees are less distracted and interrupted by colleagues; they are saving time and are more focused.

This new lifestyle can also improve the amount of sleep each individual will have as working hours are flexible; so they will feel less tired.

The Real Problem

Working from home can become a real problem. The fact of being lonely and isolated from colleagues is hard and may cause a lot of stress, mainly for women who have children since they have to take care of them, cook, clean…

Having to stay near your laptop to answer messages immediately will cause difficulties separating home life from work life, especially when a person lives and works from the same place. This lifestyle will affect employees’ capacity to work and increase the workload since they need time to adapt and manage their work.

Instead of worrying about their looks in video meetings, people prefer to socialize to prevent disconnection, lack of motivation, and anxiety.

Defeat your Mental Health Problems

Always keep in mind that bad mental health can decrease productivity and break relationships.

Don’t put your position at risk and never let stressful situations beat you. Stay motivated and take breaks to keep focused. Talk about your emotions, share your discomforts and your fears. You won’t appear weak for doing that.

Stay connected with your colleagues; use videos and apps such as zoom and Microsoft Teams.

Stay away from negative thoughts; everybody makes mistakes. Don’t confuse mistakes for failure. Prioritize your mental health and remind yourself of your qualifications and experiences.

Don’t forget to ask for feedback concerning your projects, work, and performance. It’s a way to learn and improve yourself.

Last but not least, the balance between work and personal life. Create a specific working area in your house and learn how to enjoy your free time.

Supporting your Employees Means Supporting your Business

Strong leadership is needed to overcome all types of problems.

Employers should take into consideration the feelings of each employee and understand how he truly feels. Be flexible, understanding, open-minded and support them; your team is your responsibility.

Value their mental well-being like their physical one. Normalize taking mental health days off just as if they were going to the doctor.

That’s how they will feel supported and empowered.
